Peter WalterWe are delighted to share that our very own Peter Walter, a Distinguished Investigator in our Bay Area Institute, received the BBVA Foundation’s Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Biology and Biomedicine. This award is in recognition of Peter’s research on the unfolded protein response (UPR), a cellular quality-control system that is critical to understanding diseases that may result from cellular processes gone awry, such as cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Peter is deeply grateful to the BVVA Foundation for this recognition and to all those who made this research possible. “I would like to thank the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and UC San Francisco, where much of my research on the unfolded protein response was conducted, the students, postdocs, and collaborators who worked diligently to bring the work to fruition, and my current home at Altos Labs,” he said.

Our CEO Hal Barron and the entire Altos team join Peter in celebrating this award. “We are incredibly proud of Peter’s well-deserved recognition and are grateful that he has brought his profound wisdom and expertise to Altos,” said Hal.

Peter shares the award with Kazutoshi Mori, Ulrich Hartl, and Arthur Horwich. Please visit the BBVA Foundation's announcement here for more information about Peter’s award and to see an interview about his research.
