Jin Chen, PhD
Principal Investigator
Dr. Jin Chen is a Principal Investigator at the Altos Labs Bay Area Institute of Science.
Prior to joining Altos Labs, Jin was an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Jin is one of the leaders in the emerging field of the “microproteome”. He uncovered pervasive non-canonical translation of the mammalian genome, encoding a whole universe of novel, unannotated proteins. In addition, he developed various CRISPR-based tools and functional genomic techniques. His lab is interested in building innovative tools to explore the organizational principles of the genome and transcriptome, as well as studying the information encoded in the genome and how the expression of this information is regulated during reprogramming, cellular stress and aging. Before UT Southwestern, Jin did his postdoctoral research with Jonathan Weissman at the University of California San Francisco and received his PhD from Stanford University with Jody Puglisi. He has received numerous awards for his work, including a NIH Pathway to Independence Award, Endowed Scholar award from UT Southwestern, CPRIT Award, Searle Scholar Award (declined), and the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (declined).
