Diego previously served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research has significantly contributed to our understanding of the integrated stress response (ISR) and the unfolded protein response (UPR). His graduate work at NYU led to the discovery of the control of cellular developmental decisions by the UPR and his postdoctoral research uncovered conserved stress-sensing principles of the UPR stress sensor IRE1 and its interconnectivity with the cell's protein synthesis machinery. Diego's contributions include co-discovering the small-molecule ISR inhibitor ISRIB, uncovering new fundamental signaling principles in the ISR/UPR, and revealing layers of interconnectivity between the ISR and the UPR. His lab at Altos focuses on understanding how cellular stress responses maintain cell health.
